We are going to try on bridesmaid dresses on Saturday with my friend, the bride and we wanted to do something nice for the bride. Is there something that we can do that will make her feel special since the "trying on dresses" is mostly about us? We are all going to lunch afterwards but I think we are going to decide once we are all together. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I’m getting married January 2010 and know what I want (not exactly but I know what flatters me and what kind of style I am looking for – 1950s by the way!). A friend of mine is getting married two years from now and is shopping frantically for wedding and bridesmaid dresses with her girlfriends – is it just me or is she crazy? Should I be freaking out and grabbing what I want too?

There is always a direct proportion to the comfort of children in weddings, to the comfort of adult guests. The comfort of little guests in a wedding will affect the comfort of the older guests. This does not always hold true when taken the other way around, so it is wise to carefully plan everything that may affect the disposition of our little girls in weddings.

The flower girl dress is the first concern of parents whenever the little girl is tasked to be a flower girl. Parents usually pay for the flower girl dresses. If the bride and groom does not offer to pay, parents should buy the dress. Coordinate with the bride what will be the design of her dress, and the bridesmaid dresses. The flower girl dress can then be based on the dominant design, or pick one design element and use it also for the flower girl’s dress, either as the main design or an accessory in the flower girl’s dress.

With the main design of the flower girl dress cleared with the bride, here are several factors to consider ensuring your little girl is comfortable and pretty on the wedding day.

Fabric

The fabric of flower girl dresses varies, but it is best to match it to the season. A heavy fabric, such as velvet, is great to use for cooler weddings, and satin/ lighter dresses are better to use during weddings in the warmer months. Inappropriate fabrics may also be itchy, or worse, cause rashes for your little flower girl, so please pick the fabric carefully.

Long sleeves or short? Cap sleeves or sleeveless? Long skirt? Knee-high? Floor length?

Consider the season/weather, the church, the reception venue. Will your flower girl feel cold or too warm? Where will the wedding ceremony be held? Consider if the ceremony and reception will be held indoors or out. A sleeveless flower girl dress can be both comfortable and flexible. Sleeveless flower girl dresses let your little girl move freely. If you think it may get too cold for her, bring a dainty jacket or bolero that is appropriate for the flower girl dress.

What length is appropriate for the flower girl dress? Can my little girl carry herself well and not trip on a floor-length skirt? Smaller girls may find it easier to have the skirt of the flower girl dress above the ankles or knee-length. Bigger girls may carry themselves more confidently and easily with floor-length skirts. Also, consider the “dirt magnet” factor of the skirt if it is too long, especially if the wedding will be held outdoors.

In these days when being practical is required, it would be nice to get a pretty, neutral dress that may also be worn as a special occasion dress. Get something that can be worn during birthdays, attending other weddings, etc. It may also be used as a communion dress or church dress.

Embellishments and accessories

Flower girls are just too cute in their beautiful dresses it is easy to go overboard with other accessories and embellishments. If you are thinking of attaching a pretty flower/s or sash to her dress, please do sew it on rather than use safety pins. Ever notice how safety pins have the uncanny ability to open by itself only during the most formal occasions? Safety pins get itchy on the skin and may make your pretty flower girl fidget. Your little girl may get the safety pin open as she moves around, and injure herself, so sew on embellishments instead.

Test the length of sashes. Nothing too long, please. Your pretty flower girl may trip down the aisle if a foot gets entangled on a long sash.

Ask your little girl if she’d like to wear gloves, but keep in mind that these may get uncomfortable the longer it is worn. The flower girl’s grip is also hampered with gloves, so consider carefully if these should be used. Or your little flower girl may remove these for some time and worn again later.

Shoes and footwear

It is always healthy for little girls (and “bigger adult” girls, actually) to wear flat shoes. Cute mary janes, or pretty slippers can both be appropriate and comfortable flower girl shoes. If your little girl is wearing new shoes with her formal dress, let her walk around the house days before the wedding so the new shoes will settle on her feet. Let her also wear the stockings or formal socks she will wear at the wedding to let her grow comfortable with her new footwear.

For good measure, bring along comfortable but pretty footwear on the wedding day itself so that your child may use these as back-up shoes just in case she has a hard time on her feet further along the wedding.

Makeup

Little girls love to be primped and pampered as well with hair and makeup during a wedding. Let her wear make up if you think it okay. Just keep it light to make sure it enhances your little girl’s natural beauty, not hide it.

Last minute tips

Try out the dress a day or two before . Let her wear it an hour or two, practice. Tell her what good behavior is expected of her for being the flower girl during the wedding. On the wedding day itself, it may be a good idea to make her up and fix her hair first in comfortable button-down clothes. Dress her up the last minute so that the flower girl dress does not get crumpled or dirty while waiting for the wedding to start.

Affirming our little girls

At each step of the wedding, affirm your pretty flower girl that she is doing a good job and that you are proud of her. If you like, reward her with a keepsake, such as a bracelet or necklace. However, it is always a parents’ affirmation that will mold her character, long after the wedding has finished and the flower girl dress has been outgrown.

Every bride has a vision of her wedding party as they walk down the aisle. You have a color in mind, a style and your maids have been carefully chosen. Shopping for your bridesmaid dresses should be easy, but its not. Maids or mom do not like the style, the color or the fabric. Take the sting out of shopping for your bridesmaid dresses by keeping in mind your maids body shape and their budget.

Pre shop for your maids with just ONE trusted friend, the maid of honor, your sister or your mother. Look at the different styles, colors and fabrics and narrow down your choices to no more than three dresses. Then make an appointment with the salon to bring your maids to pick THE dress, giving all the maids a choice and a vote.

When pre shopping, its really important to keep your maids body shape in mind. Happy maids equal a happy wedding. If they are uncomfortable in the style you have chosen, you will have problems. You need to concentrate on dresses that will flatter their figures, are within their budget and whether they want to wear the dress again. If you choose a knee length dress, they will have to buy matching shoes which needs to be added to their budget costs.

No one has a bridal party where everyone is built the same or has perfect figures. Every body shape is different. and none are perfect. What will flatter your size 8 sister may look awful on a size 20 best friend. If you have a large busted maid, you can not expect her to go bra-less in a plunging neckline. She will be uncomfortable, you will be uncomfortable.

Do not hesitate to ask your bridal consultant for help in choosing dresses that will flatter your maids. Tell the consultant the range of sizes, keeping in mind that their regular size will not be the same in a maids dress. Maids dresses run smaller because they are cut directly to the body, there is no ease or wiggle room in the dress. If your friend is a size 12 in regular clothes and you order a size 12, chances it will not fit her. Bridesmaid dresses are sized by measurements and they run small.

If one of your maids is a plus size, she will have to pay extra for a larger size. It is a manufacturers charge, it costs more money to produce because they use more fabric. You need to keep her in mind when choosing a dress. You do not want to put a plus size gal in a mermaid silhouette unless she is built perfectly in proportion. You also do not want to put any pear shaped or larger hipped maid in a sleek mermaid silhouette. It will not flatter them. Instead, choose a softly flowing A line skirt that flows over the hips. Your maid will look slimmer, she will be comfortable and you will be happier.

If you have a maid who is very large busted, avoid plunging necklines or any dress neckline where she can not wear a strapless bra. Many of today’s strapless dresses have built in bras and detachable spaghetti straps. Be aware that some maids will still have to wear a strapless bra. Look for a dress with a straight across strapless neckline that comes up high enough on the bodice to hid the cleavage.

If you have maids that are thick in the waistline, look for empire waist or baby doll dresses. Wrapped waist dresses that wrap to the side of the dress are very slimming and give the illusion of having a smaller waistline.

If you have a maid that is very small busted, bra cups sewn into her dress can even up her figure. It is a very common alteration and very inexpensive.

If your maids want to wear the dress again, the truth is that they probably will not because a bridesmaid dress is a formal dress. However, if you choose a color that they can wear again and a simple elegant style, they can. Long dresses can be shortened to knee or tea length. Brooches can be unpinned, straps or a little jacket or shawl can be worn with it. If you INSIST on putting them in baby pink poofy rouched pick up skirts, make sure they are all up for it and can afford the expenditure before you commit to the purchase.

Another thing to keep in mind is that not all dresses and styles come in all colors. If you just have to have a color, you will waste a lot of time shopping and limit yourself to very few choices. Instead, shop for the style and pick a shade variation based on your color choice. And please consider whether the color will be flattering on your bridesmaids.

The quality of the dress does matter. If you fall in love with a bridesmaid dress your maids can not afford, and you see a knock off of the dress for a ridiculously low price, it is not going to be the same dress you saw in a salon. The fit will be different, the cut will be different, the fabric will be different. It probably will not have that cool built in bra or enough support to keep the girls in place. It probably will wrinkle more than the original because they are using lower grade fabric. If you do not see it and can not touch it, please do not buy it sight unseen. You will save yourself and your bridesmaids a lot of disappointment.

Planning a dream wedding could be an extremely stressful affair. As the bride, you have to make decisions about your wedding theme, the ceremony and reception decorations, the catering, your wedding dress and even the dresses of your bridesmaids.

You may be wondering why bridesmaid dresses are so important; after all, they’re not the ones getting married. Well, whether you like it or not, you have to invest quite some time figuring out how your bridesmaid dresses can fit in with your wedding’s overall theme.

A great bridesmaid dress should complement or provide a great contrast between your wedding dress, the invitations and even the flowers you’re using to decorate your chosen venue. In short, bridesmaid dresses should match or, at the very least, complement your wedding’s color scheme.

Choosing Bridesmaid Dresses

The following are some tips on how you can pick out your bridesmaid dresses:

Tip 1: Pick something simple that will make your bridesmaids look chic, feminine and sophisticated.

You’re the bride, so it’s only fitting that you be the center of attention on your big day, but it’s equally important that your bridesmaids look their best as well. Simple but elegant bridesmaid dresses will keep eyes on you without making your closest female friends and family members look like complete eyesores.

Tip 2: Choose bridesmaid dresses that flatter everyone’s figure.

Bridesmaids, just like bridesmaid dresses come in different shapes and sizes. Though you want uniformity, it is possible that your chosen bridesmaid dress design won’t flatter everyone. If you really want uniformity between the bridesmaid dresses, then choose universally flattering dress shapes and styles for your bridesmaid gowns.

Empire waists, princess skirts and A-Line dresses all flatter different figures; pick the style that will suit all the female members of your wedding entourage.

Tip 3: If you’re after diversity, then you can ask your bridesmaids for their desired dress styles and colors.

Some brides prefer a little variety when it comes to bridesmaid dresses. If you’re okay with having bridesmaids dressed in different colors or styles, then save yourself from the headache of having to choose dress designs for each of your bridesmaids. Ask your bridesmaids to pick out their preferred dress styles themselves.

Tip 4: Work with a budget.

Let’s face it: weddings are expensive affairs. Unless you have a massive bank account, you have to work with a wedding budget. It’s unfair for your bridesmaids to pick out extremely pricey designer bridesmaid dresses. If you have a budget to follow, inform your bridesmaids. You have to do what you can to make sure all the other aspects of your wedding are financially taken cared of.

Tip 5: Choose between one-piece dresses and separates.

Although traditionally, all bridesmaid dresses consists of one-piece gowns, choosing separates over gowns may make it easier for you to find a style that suits each of your bridesmaids.

Tip 6: Consider the season when picking out your bridesmaid dresses.

The weather and the time of the year are helpful factors when it comes to determining gown styles and fabrics. For summer or spring weddings, go for lighter fabrics, short hems and even strapless styles. For winter weddings, you may want to go for floor-length dresses, sleeved gowns and shawls for the bridesmaid dresses.

Tip 7: Keep things simple when it comes to accessorizing.

Less is more when it comes to bridesmaid jewelry. Since it’s customary for the bride to give her bridesmaids gifts, why not give your bridesmaids matching jewelry pieces to wear to your wedding?

A lovely pair of earrings, a necklace or a brooch is enough to make your bridesmaids appear chic, sleek and fashion-fabulous.

If you’re going for an ultra-formal look, then nice gloves and shawls are always great bridesmaid accessories.

Tip 8: Keep things comfortable when choosing footwear. To keep your bridesmaids looking and feeling their absolute best, keep their comfort in mind when you pick out their shoes. Think about it: they’ll be standing for long periods of time and will probably dance the night away during the reception; you wouldn’t want them tripping and feeling uncomfortable in impossibly high heels, right? Low-heeled, strappy sandals are always comfortable and stylish options for your bridesmaids’ footwear.

Another option is to ask your bridesmaids to provide their own shoes for the event. Simply specify your desired shoe color, and you’re good to go.

Keep your bridesmaid dress-hunt hassle-free by following these simple tips.

There are many styles of romantic wedding invitations and it primarily comes down to personal preference. This preference can dictate which romantic invitations are chosen for the ceremony. You can take the classic route or a modern one and still have wonderfully romantic and personalized invitations that you can cherish for the rest of your lives. The best way to personalize your wedding invitations and make them especially romantic is to really sit down and plan them out; and remember, there is no need to have anyone tell you what is or is not romantic.

The colors that you choose for your wedding invitations set the mood for the entire wedding celebration. By the time you have begun designing your wedding invitations, if you have not yet settled on a color scheme, it is now the perfect time. Romantic and personalized wedding invitations can coordinate with the overall theme of the wedding. If, for example, the bridesmaid dresses are lavender, you may opt for wedding invitations that complement that color scheme. Perhaps going with some deep purples with wisteria accents is the way to go.

The embellishments that you choose to personalize your wedding invitations are also very important in making them romantic. The most common embellishment for a traditionally romantic wedding invitation is the ribbon. The ribbon that you choose for your wedding invitations should coordinate with your wedding scheme but it should also be delicate as well as tasteful. Silk and organza ribbons work well for romantic wedding invitations. The color of your ribbon should complement the rest of the invitation and coordinate with your entire wedding color scheme.

Furthermore, you may choose to embellish your invitations with elements like buttons and stitching in place of the ribbon. Whimsical embellishments such as these give your wedding a personalized feel, romantic look, and can be an excellent first introduction of your wedding to each of your guests. Hand tying ribbons as well as hand-stitching threads and buttons to your invitations are also great representations of your devotion to each other and can be evident to each invited guest.

The construction of the invitation is also integral to how personalized and romantic the invitations are. Good quality paper stock, vellum, and even some sparkle are key ingredients for personalized invitations. It mostly comes down to how these items are used on the invitation to determine how romantic the invitation is after it is completed. Taking the time and effort to plan different layers of the paper sheets can lend to a romantic, traditional, or a modern feel. Single layers of cardstock and paper give an air of simplicity. Wedding invitations with several layers of paper, vellum, and cardstock are apparent in more intricately designed romantic invitations.

When designing your wedding invitations, the overall look and construction is vastly important to how personalized and romantic they are, but the wording is also essential. While traditional invitation wording is perfectly acceptable, it is not as romantic as some couples would like. In an effort to make your wedding invitations more personalized and romantic, you may want to think about including a poem or perhaps even song lyrics that are special to you and your soon-to-be spouse.

While many couples may find traditional wording much more appropriate, there are couples who enjoy taking a risk together. The poem chosen for the invitation does not need to be written by a famous poet, it can even be something that the two of you made up together. The wording of your wedding invitation should always suit your personal style and most importantly show everyone how in love you two are!

There are many ways to personalize your wedding invitations and increase the amount of romantic wording or accessories included in the invitation. The design of the invitation itself, your choice of color, paper, embellishments, and wording are all crucial to making the invitation truly your own. There are even small things you can do to personalize the invitation. One small thing that you can do is to choose specific stamps for your invitations and RSVP cards. Remember, you do not need to choose the “Love” stamps most couples do. There are so many postage choices out there today that the possibilities are virtually endless. You may even consider choosing a great picture of the two of you and print your own postage!

No matter what route you take when designing your wedding invitations, as long as you put effort and a little thought into it, there is no question that it should be romantic and personalized. Just remember, your wedding is all about the love that the two of you share, so anything you put out there should be romantic! In addition, always remember to keep a copy of the invitation for your wedding scrapbook!
