My boyfriend and I were talking about how ridiculously engagement rings are and he asked me if when the time came if I wanted a diamond ring? I don’t like rings and I wouldn’t want him to spend an insane amount of money on an engagement ring. I wouldn’t mind something different, like an engagement locket!! But from what I’m told that isn’t appropriate… so what is an appropriate replacement to the classical engagement ring?

I know most people wear their engagement ring on their right hand during the ceremony, and move it to the left side before the reception. However, my "something old" is my great grandmother’s diamond ring, which I plan to wear on my right hand ring finger. Any suggestions for what to do with my engagement ring during the ceremony?

About to wear a wedding ring, how about making your hands ring friendly so the chosen ring looks great on them? One of the criteria when choosing a wedding ring, is whether or not it would look good on your fingers. Each one has been bestowed with a genetic makeup that pretty much shapes everything about us, the same thing applies to hands. Therefore ring that would look good on someone’s fingers would not look so good on you and vice versa.

Check out what wedding ring would look good on your fingers:

1) Long and medium thick fingers: Any wedding ring would look on these fingers. You can choose any shape and size, diamond too can be a large one. People with nice long fingers can carry off large diamond rings with élan, you can choose multiple diamonds or different gemstones or pearls in the wedding ring. Wedding ring would not look heavy in this case.

2) Long and thin fingers: These are what can be called as the delicate fingers. Therefore, you should make sure that the wedding ring design you choose is delicate and soft, it should rather be feminine if it is woman’s wedding ring. Floral designs, with multiple small diamonds and pearls look excellent on such fingers.

3) Long and thick fingers: These are solid fingers and choosing a delicate design especially with a small diamond would look out of place on such fingers. If you are low on budget or do not want a large diamond, try a wedding band with diamond, this will help your fingers look fuller and the wedding band more attractive.

4) Medium Length fingers: Small rings suit medium length fingers, too large or a thick wedding ring out look out of place. Instead try the one with enhances the look of your fingers, looks good in itself. The diamond in wedding ring, can be smaller ones in a band or a medium sized single diamond.

5) Short fingers: It is necessary to wear something very attractive on fingers in form of a wedding ring for people with short fingers. Many a times large rings make such fingers look shorter and unattractive. Choice of ring for such fingers should be narrow rings with lovely designs.

Try and match the wedding ring with your beloved’s hands and fingers especially. Make sure your coming together adds up to her beauty in all aspects.

I have an engagement ring from my previous marriage. I have tried selling it to local jewelers and on ebay. The center stone is a little over a half a carat. There are 8 baguettes (4 on each side.)
What can I do with the ring? I am certainly not going to wear it anymore and my ex doesn’t want it back.

An engagement ring is one single ring but an engagement set is two rings.. so is just one ring given and then at the ceremony the other one given? Or are both given when the woman accepts? Are engagement set and bridal set interchangeable? One ring is given before a ceremony and the other is reserved for at the ceremony.
Ok so a few of the posters of answers said they had never herd of an engagement set.. I had never herd of it either but I got a catalog in the mail from fingerhut and decided to browse their site and under jewlery/wedding there it was. Engagement set and bridal set.. both on the same page and to me they look like the same thing. One ring usually with a diamond and the second ring that is the same width decorated similarly without the diamond. Looks to me as they are one in the same.

Purchasing A Diamond Wedding Rings

Here are some tips on purchasing a diamond wedding ring.

  • Before you select one, try and get as much information as possible about the diamond that you want studded into your ring.
  • Ensure that the diamond you to purchase is clear. The clarity of a diamond is determined by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This institute studies the number and the degree of flaws in a diamond.
  • Select the right cut to your diamond ring. The different angles and the magnitude of the stone is the cut of the diamond. The cuts are designed to reflect light from one mirror surface to another. A man wedding ring would ideally have a much larger diamond than a lady’s ring. The “fire” of the diamond comes with proper cuts and thus makes the diamond much brighter.
  • Choose a color your like! A diamond can be of varying colors. It can range form yellow to brown. The GIA grades the diamonds based on their colors as well. They are graded in alphabets from D to Z. The later alphabets indicate darker colors.
  • Several wedding ring sets are available which showcase both rings for the man wedding rings and rings for his bride. Select a diamond wedding ring which is the most enduring piece that you could have ever bought for your beloved.

For many couples nowadays, the antique engagement ring is becoming the best choice. Not only are they less expensive, but they also generally have better craftsmanship and are more likely to become an heirloom to future generations. Antique engagement rings have an inherent “smell of charm” and “sense of individuality”.

An antique engagement ring is a ring that is over 50 years of age. Sometimes the word antique is used interchangeably with vintage so it’s often the case when one person is talking about an antique engagement ring and the other is talking about a vintage engagement ring they may actually be talking about the same thing.

There are different styles of antique engagement rings based on different eras or time. The Victorian Antique engagement ring which dates back to 1835-1900 are engagement rings set on a yellow or rose gold color. It boasts simplicity and elegance in designs but it also often has more intricate craftsmanship than many modern rings. The classic Tiffany six-prong engagement diamond ring belongs to this era. Following this era is the Edwardian antique engagement ring era that took place from 1900-1920. This is the time when Platinum became a massive hit for engagement rings instead of the very colorful yellow or gold rose of the Victorian age. Sapphires became very popular in this era. From 1920-1930, the Art Deco engagement rings became a worldwide hit. In this era the engagement rings have a streamlined, geometric look. The Art Deco rings are at present the most sought-after antique engagement rings for newlyweds.

When buying an antique engagement ring, one should remember to be careful about softer stones like Opal, Emerald, and Pearl as a primary gem on the ring or an accent, as these easily break and may contain damages on the inside when not carefully checked. In addition, one should consider the craftsmanship of the ring when purchasing it. When on a tight budget but considering a better and bigger diamond, it is wise to consider buying an antique engagement ring circa 1930-1940. The diamonds on these rings create a larger size illusion with its elaborately carved settings.

If you are curious about the history of diamond engagement rings, the earliest surviving record of an Antique Diamond Engagement Ring being given was in 1477 from Archduke Maximillian of Hamburg to Mary of Burgundy.
