“What am I supposed to have in my invitation?” This is one of the most common questions I get asked. The answer is quite simple: Anything! It’s true that convention doesn’t quite apply anymore with respect to what ‘goes’ for an invitation these days. That being said, there are a lot of components in the most common invitation styles. I should caution that there are literally thousands of options available – some a lot more unconventional and some are even bizarre. For the sake of brevity, I’ll keep my breakdown constrained to the more common components and options used in invitations today (as about 85-90% of invitation orders inevitably consist of these).

I’ve broken down my Invitation Anatomy 101 into two lessons: Typical Components and Optional (or Additional Components). The first I’ll describe here:

Typical Components

1) The Outer Envelope

  • Anchors your ‘invitation package’. This is your guest’s first impression of your wedding or event at the mailbox!
  • It is a good idea to have your return address printed on the back flap of the envelope in the same lettering as your invitation.
  • Your guest’s address may be handwritten neatly or written using the services of a calligrapher.
  • Outer Envelopes should be reasonably sturdy and presented to your post office (fully stuffed) to determine exact postage prior to stamping and mailing.

2) The Inner Envelope

  • Historically, inner envelopes were created to provide added protection to the contents of letters. That is, the outer envelope often suffered quite a bit of wear and tear between destinations, so the inner envelope would preserve the contents while identifying the recipient if the original address information wore away.
  • The need for an inner envelope no longer exists, but the romantic tradition remains. Nowadays, the inner envelope identifies only the invitees within the household (e.g. Mr. & Mrs. Wilhelm Schneider). No address is written on the inner envelope. All contents of your invitation package are placed inside the inner envelope. Usually the inner envelope back flap is left folded, but unsealed.
  • On a side note, I’ve found that amongst my clients only a small handful a year actually end up ordering inner envelopes. The decline in the use of Inner Envelopes is primarily due to the durability and material quality of custom invitation outer envelopes. This makes Inner Envelopes both expensive and redundant.

3) The Invitation

  • Obviously, the most essential component of your invitation package. If your invitation is a folded card, all other components should be placed inside the invitation. If this is not possible, or your invitation consist of a one-sided card, place all other components on top of the invitation. The goal here is to make the invitation package as neat and tidy as possible.
  • As mentioned, anything goes when it comes to invitations. However, some typical features of a custom or custom-inspired invitation may include the following:
  • Outer Card – Heavier weighted stock that envelops or mattes the invitation contents. This is the foundation of your invitation. The outer card can be anything from a plain card backing, to a pocket-fold enclosure to a multi-panel pocketed fold-out!
  • Outer Embellishments – Known as the finishing touches on the ‘exterior’ of the invitation. This can be a ribbon tie, wax seal, monogram, matted graphic, pictures, foil stamped image, name, slogan, clasp, etc.
  • Inner Card(s) – Usually, an inner card contains your invitation wording. There are hundreds of inner card options including, vellums, vellum overlays, mounted card, bound card, embossed cards, imported stationeries, decorative papers, embellished card or paper, folded cards, loose cards, etc.

4) The RSVP, Response, or Reply Card

  • Just as important as the invitation, the size and expense of your event is largely determined by the number of accepted/returned RSVP cards.
  • RSVP cards usually contain a blank line where the guest fills in his/her name and indicates the number of persons attending from his/her party. Usually an addressed and pre-stamped envelope is included to encourage your guest to respond as soon as possible.
  • RSVP cards can contain other information such as multiple dining options which must be chosen, or spaces for comments, requests, feedback etc.
    • TIP: Lightly number each RSVP card with a corresponding guest/invitation list. That way, if any RSVP card is returned blank without the sender’s information, you’ll know exactly which guest it is.

  • RSVP sizes are usually much smaller than invitations and contain an appropriately-sized return envelope. However, there is a trend towards more oversized RSVP cards (though still smaller than the invitation size).

Congratulations, now that you’ve completed the first lesson, you’re ready for the “Invitation Anatomy 101–Optional Components” articles now.

Wedding rings are a symbol of love and union. Till today, the most popular amongst all the wedding rings is the gold band. You might have seen that in comparison to the engagement rings which are mostly ostentatious, the wedding rings are simple, elegant and often understated. Such rings do not attract undue attention.

Make A Choice For A Lifetime!

A good wedding ring is durable and can withstand wear and tear. You can choose any material for your man wedding ring as well as the woman’s wedding ring. Here are some choices of metals and gemstones for your wedding rings.

  • A Platinum wedding ring is a good choice. It is a metal that has a white luster and does not tarnish easily. So you can wear a platinum wedding ring year after year without worrying about its wear and tear. Besides this, wearing platinum does not cause allergies like many other materials. Hence, it is ideal fro the brides and grooms who have sensitive skin.
  • Gold wedding ring is still the most popular choice of many brides and bridegrooms. You can go for any of the different shades of gold, such as green, rose or white gold. Gold is measured in karats and 24 karats gold is the purest. However, as pure gold is malleable and soft, it is advisable to go for a combination of gold with some other metal such as silver, to give the wedding rings durability and strength.
  • Diamonds are the most durable of all gemstones. Getting a diamond wedding ring could be a good decision if it is affordable. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and they can last forever, if you take good care of them.
  • Other options of wedding ring are those made from titanium or simple silver wedding band. There are many metals and materials to choose from when you are out searching the perfect wedding ring for yourself and your spouse to be.
  • You could also go for gemstones such as the blue sapphires or the ruby in your wedding ring. Blue is symbolic of spirituality. Ruby signifies passion and warmth. There are green gemstones as well that stand for loyalty. An emerald is a great choice for a green gemstone. Pearls are also a favorite choice of many brides and bridegrooms.
  • Choose a set or choose complementary wedding rings. Make sure that they suit your budget and match your style. Go shopping together for your wedding rings. If you have set your heart on a particular wedding ring, but it does not fit your budget, there is no harm in saving for a few months to get the ring that your heart desires. After all, wedding rings are the most special ones among all the pieces of jewelry.

As per custom, most people still go in for gold wedding rings. Nevertheless, platinum as a jewelry metal is catching the fancy of many. A platinum wedding ring’s rising popularity is on account of the metal having several advantages over gold and other metals.

Why Is A Platinum Wedding Ring Just So Great?

Here are some of these advantages that will help you decide whether you should go for a gold wedding ring or a stylish platinum wedding ring.

    • Unlike gold wedding rings, you can achieve much more elegance and modernity with a platinum wedding ring. Earlier, you used to get platinum always mixed with gold; however, today you have a vast choice of pure platinum rings.
    • A platinum ring, like a titanium wedding ring or a gold ring, shines! It has the sparkling luster of a diamond wedding ring besides being durable and strong. This means that a platinum ring does not wear and tear with your daily routine. It looks much the same, 30 years down the road of marital bliss.
    • Moreover, platinum is a neutral metal. So, it is ideal if you have sensitive skin that is prone to allergies.

Different Styles of Platinum Rings For A Wedding

You also have a big choice of different styles for your platinum wedding ring. However, whatsoever, be the style that you select, make sure that your platinum ring is comfortable and easy to wear. To check this, see that your ring is slightly curved on the inside.

For example, you can go for a simple wedding band or get elaborate platinum rings, set with stones. There are styles like milgrain platinum bands, Celtic style rings, channel diamonds bands or domed bands that you can choose from.

Platinum also goes well with gem stones and if you can afford it, nothing would be better than a platinum ring set with sparkling diamonds.

You can choose a ring with a single solitaire or a band with channel set diamonds. Here, remember to check your budget as both platinum and diamonds can weigh heavily on your pocket.

Platinum wedding rings are both stylish and practical. But as they can cost the earth and so it is advisable to check the different jewelry stores for discounts and sales. You could take a look at Florentine, hammered, satin, sandstone or shiny finished rings when you make the final choice.

A platinum wedding ring will make you stand apart. Other brides and grooms would admire your choice because platinum is a low maintenance metal that is durable and resistance to corrosion and cracking. So make a special choice for your wedding. Choose a ring that tells the world that your marriage is lustrous and durable in the toughest of times, just like your platinum wedding ring.

    Feb 5

Choosing a wedding ring can be a difficult decision to make since most people have limited experience of choosing rings and there are so many possibilities to choose from. We sell a very large range of rings in all sorts of materials and have seen big changes in the last few years.

There has been a move away from Gold (which is actually quite soft) to materials like Titanium and Stainless Steel. These ‘new’ materials simply out perform the more traditional materials in every way and are far less expensive. In particular these new materials are much stronger, tougher and scratch resistant. This has the big benefit for a person who does a lot of work with their hands; they don’t need to take their ring on and off all the time….If you have to take a ring off a lot you will eventually loose it and who needs the hassle?

These new materials are also chemically resistant and hypo allergenic; they won’t cause a reaction with you or anything else. Another interesting advantage is the choice of colours on offer….different colours , different emotional feel. If you want a really bright white metal, go for Stainless Steel, the same colour as Platinum but at a fraction of the price and much harder wearing. If you wanting something more subtle go for Titanium, which has a grey appearance. This is further enhanced by having a brushed finish. If you want black, go for Zirconium, a metal that will take on any colour after treating but people mostly want it in black. If you want a ring that will never scratch, choose a Tungsten ring, (only a diamond is harder!)

Another very popular option are mixed metal rings. These new materials are used as the main body of the ring, providing strength and then bands of other metals are cut in. The most popular option for this is a base ring of Titanium (grey) with a bright band of Silver, Platinum or Gold running through it.

Here is some more info in case your not fully converted,

    1. After a year of wear and tear a Steel or Titanium ring will look much better than a Gold or Platinum ring.

    2. If you do any work with your hands you definitely want a Steel or Titanium ring since apart from bricklaying you wont need to take it off. Ive built a house wearing my Stainless Steel ring and its still looking good.

    3. A 6mm Platinum court band will cost about 850-00. A Stainless Steel ring will cost 20-00 and outlast the Platinum band.

    4. Dont even think about buying a Rhodium plated , White Gold wedding ring for a man. It will look fantastic at the point of sale but the Rhodium plating will wear off within a couple of months revealing the champagne coloured, real White Gold underneath. It is possible to buy untreated White Gold wedding rings, which are a slightly off white colour but since there is no coating, they wont degrade over time.

    5. These new materials have rewritten the rule book on cost, we sell lots of exotic Titanium/ Platinum combination for hundreds of pounds but we actually sell more wedding rings in the 20-30 bracket. So dont be put off or think that there is something wrong with spending just 20 on a wedding ring.

    6. A lot of people think the flat top rings look cool and contemporary. They only feel comfortable on certain peoples fingers. Generally curved top rings are the most comfortable.

    7. Most women choose a 3mm-4mm ring whilst most men choose between 5mm-7mm depending on their hand size.

    8. Most people start off wanting matching wedding rings and decide on different ones as the options become clearer.

    9. It is best to order wedding rings at least 6 weeks before the big day.

    10. We sell many more Titanium rings than Stainless Steel rings, yet everybody in our shop wears Stainless Steel. This is because Titanium sounds cool and has a lot of mystique attached to it, whilst Stainless Steel sounds a lot more everyday. However, Stainless Steel has for me a very pleasing white colour to it, similar to Platinum, whilst Titanium has a darker appearance to it. They are very similar in other respects so its just a colour thing really. So dont rule out Steel, its our favourite.

    11. Don’t get too hung up on the surface finish i.e. Should I have it polished or matt? After a couple of months all rings go to the same finish…..look at an old piece of Stainless Steel cutlery and you will get the idea. Rings can be re finished in seconds with no adverse effects.

    12. Make sure that the inside of the ring has a curve, often called a court fit, this will ensure that the ring is comfortable.
